The Legend of Eng's Noodle House: Fiery Chilli Sauce

Eng's Wanton Mee is the only wanton mee in Singapore that is famous for this fiery chilli sauce. Finally, this is the time for me to try it! Today's crowd is not as many as I've heard from my friends so we didn't have to wait to get a seat.

As you can see from here, this is the history of the founder, Panjang, he started his legend since 1950's.

He peddled wanton mee around Joo Chiat neighbourhood using his tricycle-converted pushcart. Panjang's son, Eng, started to take over his dad's business and located his pushcart at Daku Road on the 1960's.

They then allocate their stall to Dunman Food Centre in 1976.

They moved again to Tanjong Katong Road in 2012.

I agree with Cavin Teo, the colour of the chilli sauce is not red at all, more of orange which might have deceived the innocent diners.

The water chestnut drink is home cooked, not too sweet, the taste is just right.

A very good drink to cool down right after a spicy food!

Apparently, the char siew is not those edged barbecued type that I prefer but it is tender because of the fats it has.

I tried the noodles without putting the chiili first.

The noodles are springy and they are thicker than those you mian we order in fishball noodles.

It is tender and fragrant even without the chilli added because of its egg flavoured noodles and the pork lard oil added into it.

They have free-flow pork lards but I guess its oil is already enough for me.

The results after mixing it, see the differences?

The chilli is stronger than the famous Korean Spicy Instant Noodles! Once I put the noodles inside my mouth, I could immediately taste the hotness in my mouth.

The hot sensation in my mouth made me can't stop eating the noodles because when I stop to cool down myself, the hotness in my mouth is increasing.

I can feel my ears are like exploding and my eyes are watery. Even though the weather is pretty cooling, but I am sweating all over my head. I could barely talk to my sister as my mouth feels the numb. I could still feel my stomach burning!

This is really thrilling and satisfying if you are a person that can take spicy.

The wanton skin is thin which is nice however, the meat inside is nothing special from those normal wanton mee and the meat is a bit too salty.

I still prefer Pontian's Wanton because the ingredient in the wanton is really very special from the others, the skin is very soft and smooth than Eng's wanton.

Overall:

  • Service 3/5

  • Ambience 3/5

  • Food 4/5

  • Worthness: 4/5
